90% of our gutter installations are 6 inch rain gutters. Most homes today are large enough that the 6 inch rain gutter is a better option. 6 inch gutters handle more water and flush debris out better. Additionally 6 inch gutters often look better because they can be installed evenly with the bottom of fascia boards.

We most often install 5 inch gutters when replacing or repairing just a portion of the gutter system to match existing gutters or in homes with a smaller roof area when the homeowner prefers 5 inch.

The 3″x4″ downspout carries twice the water capacity of a 2″x3″ that we commonly replace and is normally the best solution for most residential homes.

We also offer a 4” round downspout. This is becoming more & more popular because it looks more decorative & traditional.

For some commercial applications a 4”x5” downspout may be necessary.

Most gutter systems around have the troublesome ‘box miters’ on every corner. These ‘box miters’ are a pre-made piece that anyone can pick up at the hardware & install on any gutter. The problem that we have with this is that normally they do not fit very well because every gutter machine makes a gutter just a little differently. These box miters are normally made out of very thin aluminum & are easily bent out of shape. The other problem we have with the box miter is the seam issue. A box miter always wraps around the corner, so you end up with 3 seams to seal & keep from leaking. The potential for leaking problems is much higher simply because there are more seams and joints.

The correct way to make a corner is to use what we call a custom miter. This is when the gutter material itself is marked, cut to fit & fastened together. This corner is much stronger, looks much better, & has less potential to cause problems as the gutter ages or during heavy use.

Correctly installed gutters have:

Proper Slope: We always install our gutters with levels to ensure proper slope so that the rain water will travel to the downspout. Proper sloping on a gutter needs to be somewhere around a quarter inch drop per 10 feet of length.

Correct Fasteners: We always fasten our gutters with Raytec hidden hangers & screws. The old school procedure is to fasten the gutter with spikes & ferrules or hidden hangers fastened with a small nail. Anytime a gutter is fastened with spikes or nails , it will eventually pull loose, causing water to travel behind the gutter. This is why so many homes have rotten soffit & fascia boards. Also when a gutter is nailed on, it is almost impossible to adjust if needed. Screws will very seldom pull loose if ever! The Raytec hanger is strong enough to handle up to 225 lbs of weight!

Correctly Sealed: One very important procedure to installing a gutter system correctly is to use proper sealer on the corners & end caps. The best product that we have found is called Geocel. We like this product because it seals great, yet stays pliable & is able to flex without cracking as the aluminum expands & contracts. Yes there are other products that will work just as well, but Geocel was manufactured specifically for the gutter industry.

The best way to determine the condition of your rain gutters is to have a gutter professional inspect your entire gutter system. Give Southern Gutter Service a call and we’ll provide you with a quote for any needed repairs, new gutters or just a gutter cover system to make your gutters more maintenance free.

Warning signs that you may need to replace your gutters:

Here are some easy warning signs that might suggest you have a gutter problem, you should be able to spot these warning signs safely from the ground without going onto a ladder.

Spike and ferrule fasteners: This old system of nails or “spikes” going through the gutter and into the fascia board has been phased out. If your gutters have these fasteners, chances are they are drawing water into your fascia board and may be causing water damage.

Sagging gutters or gutters that are pulling away from your house. The weight of debris or standing water can cause gutters to pull away from the fascia boards. Once this process starts it needs to be repaired as the added weight will continue to gather at the lowest point and pull the gutter away from the home.

Damp basements, foundation cracks or pooling water against your home indicate that the gutters are not carrying water away or that water may be leaking from the gutter system

Mold, peeling paint or obvious rot around your siding or fascia. This is a clear indicator that water is escaping the gutter system and causing damage to your home.

Overflowing gutters and obvious leaks are a sign of blocked gutters or failing miter joints.

Why LeavesOut?

A quick trip to any home improvement store or online search will reveal a wide array of gutter products, all claiming they will solve your gutter problems. When we began exploring the idea of installing a gutter guard system, we looked at many of these same products and decided that LeavesOut was the very best product available so it would be the only gutter cover we would offer and install. Here are some of reasons why we feel so strongly about the LeavesOut product:

Lifetime Warranty: LeavesOut gutter covers carry a transferable limited lifetime warranty. The Alcoa 2-coat lo-mar finish is applied to both sides of the product to reduce the possibility of corrosion and extend the life of the product. Many competitors’ products are painted only on one side.

Aluminum Construction: The Alcoa aluminum used to manufacture LeavesOut helps water adhere to the surface while letting debris and leaves slide off. Aluminum does not expand and contract even in extreme weather conditions such as hot rooftops and winter ice storms. Additionally aluminum is readily available in a wide range of colors.

Gutter Integration: Some gutter products require the existing gutters to be replaced with an entirely new integrated gutter system with cover. Many people don’t need gutters replaced, just covered to keep debris out. LeavesOut gutter covers can be installed on existing gutters, new gutters or gutters than have simply been repaired, depending on the individual needs of the customer.

Gutter Profile: LeavesOut gutter covers have a lower profile than other similar products. The system blends into the existing roof line and often enhances the visual appeal of a home. Based on appearance alone, customers will frequently choose LeavesOut over the competition.

Gutter Attachment: Most gutter covers are attached to the gutter using either aluminum or plastic fasteners. LeavesOut gutter covers use stainless steel which, of course, is stronger and more durable, and therefore can be spaced further apart. This means there is less opportunity for debris to catch on the fasteners resulting in virtually no maintenance.

Roofing Damage: LeavesOut gutter covers are secured to the gutter lip with the material slipped between the 2 bottom layers of shingle. They are not glued, nailed, or screwed to the roofing. When it comes time to re-shingle the roof, LeavesOut gutter covers can be easily removed and reinstalled.

Ladder Line: The position of LeavesOut gutter covers allow a ladder to be leaned against the gutter and not touch or damage the cover. Several other products on the market can get dented or pushed out of position by ladders being leaned against them.

Versatility: The design and installation method of LeavesOut gutter covers is quite flexible so they can be installed on a variety different roof configurations. With this flexibility LeavesOut can be installed on both 5” and 6” standard aluminum gutters. They are successfully installed on standard shingled roofs, cedar shake roofs, metal roofs and even slate roofs. LeavesOut installs on virtually flat roofs to nearly vertical (23/12 pitch) roofs.

Made in the USA: LeavesOut gutter covers have been made in Hendersonville,NC by Ken Rutter and his family since 1989.

Installed by Certified Technicians: Every LeavesOut installation is performed by trained and certified technicians. Correct installation results in a longer lasting better performing product than other gutter products on the market.
